Veterans feed homeless for Veterans Day

Veterans from Veteran Service Corps, American Legion Post #308 and CRST Veteran Service office took a new approach to service on Veterans Day 2022. Instead of a traditional patriotic event, the vets decided to feed the homeless in Eagle Butte.

The original idea was to bring soup to folks at “The Wall” at the intersection of Hwy 212 and Sycamore St. but, given weather and logistics, the event was moved to the Bingo Hall and rescheduled from Veterans Day, Friday, Nov. 11 to the following Saturday, Nov. 19.

Over 40 chickens, mostly roosters, from the Veteran Service Corps ranch in Promise were slaughtered, butchered and frozen in preparation for the feed by VSC members Chris Duesing, Warren Ducheneaux, Brett Curry, Steve Huey and Lang Terry.

The veterans made huge pots of soup with beef, chicken, noodles and beans under the direction of cook Steve Huey. Annie Hall Walker of Promise assisted with food prep and fry bread.
