Eagle Butte

Veterans’ Day events scheduled on CRST, 11/11

The Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe and the South Dakota American Legion Post 308 will host an all-day event in honor of Veterans Day. The event will take place on Saturday, November 11, at the CRST Veterans Center in Eagle Butte.

Events will start in the morning with a flag raising ceremony that will include an honor song and victory song, a firing squad, and the playing of taps.

Korean War veterans will be honored with a special awards ceremony. The medals that will be awarded are a commemorative medal from the Korean government as gratitude to U.S. service members who served in the Korean War.

American Legion District 1 Commander, Kevin Morello, will be the special guest speaker. As District Commander, Morello represents numerous counties in South Dakota, including Ziebach and Dewey counties.

A memorial roll-call and traditional Lakota memorial song will be performed for veterans who have passed away within the past two years.

Honor songs will also be performed for the late Army Private First Class (PFC) Sheldon Hawk Eagle and the late Army Corporal (CPL) Tanner O’Leary.

PFC Hawk Eagle was killed in Iraq on November 15, 2003. CPL O’Leary was killed in Afghanistan on December 9, 2007. Both were members of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe.

WWII veteran and First Lieutenant Marcella LeBeau will also be honored in recognition for her military service. LeBeau has been a member of the American Legion for 44 years.

A meal will be served to all those in attendance. Everyone is welcomed to honor our veterans.
