Statewide Democratic Regional Delegate Selection Caucuses held on March 14

The 2020 U.S. Presidential Candidate Debate was aired on CNN on Sunday, March 15. It was the first time Senator Bernie Sanders and Vice President Joe Biden presented their views on national issues.

The Democratic Party held Regional Delegate Selection Caucuses all across South Dakota this past weekend. There is a total of seven regions in the state and each region elected delegates to represent either 2020 president candidates: Senator Bernie Sanders or former-Vice President Joe Biden.

Delegate candidates submitted paperwork prior to each regional caucus indicating which presidential nominee they would like to represent.

In Region Six, the caucus site for was originally scheduled for Faith, South Dakota. Normally this is done in-person; however, because of COVID-19, travel restrictions and social distancing, the caucus was held electronically via conference call.

The caucus was administered by Alli Moran, who is on the Democratic executive party committee. There were more than a dozen candidates who gave their speeches with three dropping out before the election.

Each delegate candidate was asked for votes from their fellow candidates. After the candidates gave short speeches, the candidates were asked by name, who they prefer to be a delegate. The top vote getter became a delegate, and this step was repeated six times until all the delegates were chosen. The region was able to fulfill the Affirmative Action quota requirements the Democratic Party imposed upon the caucus.
