OLC announces open house for new college center

Oglala Lakota College students at the Pejuta Haka College Center (PHCC), Kyle, SD will be starting the 2019 Fall Semester in a new building.  On May 16, 2019 OLC will celebrate the move into the new building with a dedication ceremony and open house beginning at 11:00 a.m.   The Pejuta Haka College Center is the third largest center of Oglala Lakota College with an average of 144 students registered the last four semesters.

The previous building served the students since 1991, and was now in dire need of repairs.  The Board of Trustees approved the construction of a new building rather than investing more funds in repairs.  The building includes 7 classrooms, a computer lab, a library, 3 offices, a reception area, a Student Union and a SMART classroom (the first to be installed in OLC’s 11 college centers).

“We are pleased to be able to offer the students who attend Pejuta Haka College Center an improved learning environment,” stated President Shortbull.  “The commitment of our students to learn against all odds makes me proud, they deserve the facilities needed to concentrate on their studies,” said Shortbull.

We are appreciative of the funding for the construction of the new facility funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Tribal College Grant Program/Community Facilities and the USDA 1994 Institutions Endowment Fund.

Stephanie Sorbel, Center Director for PHCC, stated, “I look forward to seeing the excitement of the students as they walk through the doors of the new building to begin the Fall semester.”

The Open House will begin at 11:00 a.m. with a song by Lakota drum group Little Brave Hearts followed with a blessing of the building by spiritual leader Steve Dubray, and a ribbon cutting and speech by OLC President Thomas Shortbull.  Pejuta Haka College Center board and staff will have the honor of holding the ribbon for the ribbon cutting—Emma Sam, Theresa Mendoza, Alvon Little Whiteman, Billy Gourd, Stephanie Sorbel, Denise Harris, Stella Hernandez, Willis Zephier and Alyssa Whirlwind Horse.  OLC Lakota Studies Instructor Marcell Bull Bear will Emcee the event.
