Massacre of Wounded Knee Creek/Čhaŋkpé Ópi Wakpála Congressional Medal of Honor recipients

In keeping with the remembrance of those lost, wounded and survivors at the Massacre of Wounded Knee, the following is the list of names of members of the 7th Cavalry and the 1st and 2nd US Artillery of the United States, commanded by Major Samuel M. Whitside, who received the Congressional Medal of Honor for their actions at the Massacre of Wounded Knee Creek/Čhaŋkpé Ópi Wakpála. Twenty-six of the medals were presented by President Benjamin Harrison over the course of 1891. The remaining four were awarded between 1891 and 1895.

The Wounded Knee military action took place on December 29-30, 1890. Close to 300 unarmed Miniconjou and Hunkpapa Lakota men, women and children were indiscriminately killed by soldiers gone berserk and out of control of their officers. Twenty-five soldiers were killed, 39 wounded, and six later died of injuries.

Sam Russell, of the “Army at Wounded Knee” blog reports, “Thus, an accurate reflection of medals surrounding Wounded Knee is thirteen 7th Cavalry soldiers received the Medal of Honor for their actions at Wounded Knee, four for their actions at Drexel Mission on the White Clay Creek, one for actions in both battles, and two for their conduct during the entire campaign.”
