“Marty” Avin E. Martin, Jr.

“Marty” Avin E. Martin, Jr., age 58, passed away September 24, 2018 in Rapid City, SD, after a courageous battle with laryngeal cancer.

Marty was born November 23, 1959, in Faith, SD, to Avin and JoAnne (Anderson) Martin.  Marty grew up in Eagle Butte, SD, then made homes in Wellington, TX, Aberdeen, and Fort Pierre, SD, before returning to make his home in Eagle Butte for his remaining years.

Marty was blessed with four sons, two daughters, and 13 grandchildren.  Marty was a very loving son, brother, father, and grandpa.  With his sharp wit, he would be quick to tease, but wouldn›t think twice if you needed the shirt off his back.  He was a proud grandpa and enjoyed traveling to watch various activities his grandchildren were involved in, from rodeos, baseball, wrestling, to even sitting through a 3-hour dance recital this spring.

Marty possessed natural skills in many trades including operating heavy construction equipment to build dams, working with his second «parents,” Boyd and Vallee Anderson, and «brother,» Gus Anderson.  He was a proud owner/operator of Martin Trucking based in Fort Pierre, logging well over a million miles over the years, as well as building roads in the Rapid City-Catron Boulevard area.  He also spent many years working for very close family friends, Fred and Marie Kost, and their son, Kenny, on their family ranch south of Eagle Butte.  Marty was known as an excellent cook, always had a neat, well-organized home, lawn, and an annual abundance of fresh vegetables from his garden.  His mechanical skills enabled him to fix about anything.

Survivors include very special friend, Odiesa Little Star; sons, Ryan (Brock, Rylee, Jacey, and Rya), Robert (wife-Lisa, Rance and Katie), and Cole (wife-Amanda, Cade); daughters, Danielle (husband-Matt Scott, Reina, Rolla and Reva), and Lahnee (Maddie Avin Stoeser); parents, Avin & Jo Anne Martin; siblings, Leon (Krista) Martin, Vernie (Kathy) Martin, Terri Martin, Carolyn Martin, Gloria (Jim Bowman) Hunt, and Esther (Dayton) Newbrough; and numerous nieces and nephews.  Odiesa’s family members that were a very big part of Marty’s life include Talika, Sterling, Ashley, Kaitlin, and Sakura.

Marty was preceded in death by son, Rodney (who is survived by wife-Rebecca, Tommie and Rowdy); maternal and paternal grandparents; and many special friends.

We want to wish a special thank you to Odiesa for her loving care and companionship.  Thank you to everyone who called, visited, or is here today to share in our grief and honor Marty’s life.  He was blessed to have so many true friends who continued to be a part of his life and support his health concerns over the past several years, some of whom include: Carlyle Ducheneaux, Boyd and Vallee Anderson, Gus and Kathy Anderson, Bob and Marie Berndt, Randy and Barb Berndt, Wayne Maynard, Mike Peterson, Kristi Peterson, Rodney Westover, Brady Ward, Tommy Dale Vines, Danielle Williams, Darryl Stuart, Jim Bowman, Tom Christenson, Darrel Zahn, Mark Reinhart, Leann Hlavka, Duane Hannum, and Steve Kost.  We apologize if there is anyone’s name we have missed, as he had such a large circle of friends it is quite possible we have missed someone.

Memorial services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, October 1, 2018, at United Church of Christ in Eagle Butte, SD, with Pastor Pauline Webb officiating.  Inurnment will follow at Eagle Butte Cemetery.
