Martin, Briggs elected to Eagle Butte City Council




The Eagle Butte City Council will have two new faces next month after Tiny Martin and Richard Briggs were elected to the council last Tuesday.


Briggs running for the Ward II seat occupied by Mark Steffan defeated Steffan 18-5.


In a three way race in Ward III, Tiny Martin was the winner collecting 23 votes. Tigger Joens was second with 8 votes, and Julie Garreau received 5 votes.


The Eagle Butte City Council met on Thursday evening in regular session and certified the results.


Following an executive session, the council approved the hiring of Kelly Anderson for the city clerk position, after the resignation of Lisa Benoist. Anderson will be hired at $12.00 an hour and will work six hour days and a full forty hours the last week of the month.


The council also approved the hiring of Jesse Fulls for temporary employment with the city.


A lease permit was approved for the city owned building between the city office and Hardware Hank contingent once a specified rental amount is agreed upon to house the Federal Probation Office.


A request by Nicky White Eyes to rent the Lakeside Club House was approved.


The council also approved a building request by Richard Ducheneaux to add on to his existing deck.


Maintenance


The council approved a $12,500 expenditure to fix the water tower near the high school after it sprung a leak two weeks ago. Currently the water tower is completely shut down until the repairs are completed.


Following the election canvas, the city council approved a community request by Luanna Uses the Knife on behalf of the SDSU extension for the donation of 2000 gallons of water for the community garden. The council approved 4,000 gallons or one month’s minimum.


The council approved a request to place a speed bump for Porcupine Street.  A second speed bump was ordered to be placed on Landmark Street near Hometown Furniture.


Maintenance Superintendent Jon Ganje reported that the tribe had pulled the city’s dumpsters. It was stated that the tribe pulled the dumpsters due to non-payment, but Finance Officer Sheila Ganje stated that the bill had been paid and that she had requested an invoice to show the charges.


Police Department


The Council approved a request from Police Chief Norman Schuler for the purchase of a $1,800 dash camera for his police unit.


Schuler also reported that there have been a number of fender benders on Main Street near the Head Start. Cars have been parking clear to the curb making an obstructed view for drivers pulling onto Main Street from the west.  The curb will be painted yellow to make drivers park further to the north to allow for better visibility.


Other business


Will hold special meeting on 4/28 for old business closeout.
