Love Yourself, Respect Your Family

The Canli Coalition of Cheyenne River is asking all smokers, chewers, vapers and other commercial tobacco users to pledge to quit tobacco on Thursday, November 21 for the American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout. One day can lead to two, three, four, and many more!

Quitting tobacco and nicotine now will help you enjoy the rest of your life! You are strong and greater than big tobacco. You can end your addiction to tobacco and nicotine. The first step to quitting is to pick a date. Thursday, November 21 would be an excellent day to pick to quit while showing love for yourself and respect for your family. Support from friends and family can help make all the difference when you are trying to quit tobacco. Tobacco and nicotine is one of the strongest addictions anyone can have. Support from friends and family to go for a walk instead of lighting up or having a chew is one way to get through the craving. The key is doing something different when you would have previously, out of habit lit a cigarette or took a pinch of chew, or puffed a vape. Changing what you do and having caring people to talk to can help those who use tobacco to kick the habit. Tobacco use is the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the United States. In fact among American Indians, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death; lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths, and those who smoke are at a higher risk of developing diabetes. A person who smokes a pack of cigarettes a day spends on average $6.99.  The yearly cost for a pack a day smoker is $2,551. Think of what you could do with that amount of money…the possibilities are endless when you calculate the savings for many years of being tobacco free.
