“To us you were a hero”
The life, legacy, and family of Fran Vogel was honored during the Tiospaye Topa Thunderhawks basketball game against the Crazy Horse Chiefs on Thursday, February 20. The beloved Dean of Students journeyed into the spirit world on November 6, 2019 after a battle with cancer.
His passing was mourned by many throughout Cheyenne River and South Dakota.
Tiospaye Topa Superintendent Brent Mareska presented a plaque to the Vogel family on behalf of the school. It read, “Mr. Vogel was a dedicated and self-sacrificing individual that devoted himself to his students. No matter the cohort of students under his guidance, he served them with the same support, kindness, and wisdom. He asked the students to reach as high as the sky and then celebrated them for just reaching as high as they could. He worked with teachers, parents, social workers, and many others to address the academic, the career, and the personal and social development needs of students. His efforts were important to student success in school and in life. To the world you may have been a counselor, but to us you were a hero.”
After accepting the plaque, the Vogel family presented gifts in memory of their beloved— a handcrafted shadow box which contained a photo of Fran and a star quilt that was made by TTS teacher Mrs. Bessette.
They also gave monetary gifts to the school handgame team, the school wacipi, student council, and the school library. Lastly, the family donated money to the Crazy Horse student council to fund a student attendance initiative.
The plaque and shadow box will be displayed at the school in memory of the Fran. The boys basketball team also paid tribute- they wore black sweaters that had a patch of a basketball with “Mr. Vogel” embroidered in the center.
Fran worked at TTS beginning August 2014 until his passing.
