Farmers Union Campers learn about agriculture & cooperation

Dupree, S.D. – 10 South Dakota youth ages 6-13 turned out to learn about cooperatives and leadership from an unlikely source – the honeybee – during Dewey/Ziebach Farmers Union Day Camp held August 11.  Honeybees were the focus as Farmers Union staff and volunteers taught youth about their valuable role in their colony as community members and how we as citizens can work together to build stronger communities.

“Like a successful hive, working together we all can accomplish more. What a visual way to teach youth about the role cooperatives play in our state, as well as the important role each of them can play in their communities,” said Rachel Haigh-Blume, South Dakota Farmers Union State Education Director. “Because of the important role honeybees play in agriculture, they have been in the news. Kids are aware of what is going on in their world – this opens up great opportunities to dialogue about what today’s farmers do to take care of our natural resources.”

“Agriculture plays such a valuable role in our community. Farmers Union Day Camp is a great place for South Dakota’s youth to learn about teamwork, agriculture and leadership while having fun in a safe and friendly environment,” said Haigh-Blume.
