West River Eagle

Emaline Moran

Emaline Moran, 91, of Bear Creek, passed away Wednesday, May 5, 2021, at the Cheyenne River Health Center in Eagle Butte. Private family services will be held. A public graveside service will be at 12 PM MT, Tuesday, May 11, at the Eagle Butte Cemetery. Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge is in charge of arrangements.

Emaline Moran was born at the Old Cheyenne Agency to Patrick and Ida (Swiftbird) LeBeau on February 6, 1930. She grew up in the Little Moreau/Promise area within the Cheyenne River Reservation. She graduated high school from Stephan Boarding School and received her Licensed Practical Nursing at St. Mary’s Hospital in Pierre, SD.

She married Manson Austin Garreaux and through this union had three daughters, Linda, Carol, and Margaret. Her second marriage was to the love of her life, Edward Moran, and they were united for 44 years. They lived in McLaughlin until her retirement from the federal government at the IHS McLaughlin Clinic. They then moved to the Bear Creek community.

Mom will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She touched so many lives with her kindness, laughter, and humor, which was what got us through many of life’s challenges. In her earlier days she loved to dance and listen to local country bands, especially Frankie Thompson and Wyman Archambault. She was well known by family for making delicious homemade caramel rolls and got many requests from people for their own personal pans.

Emaline’s Catholic faith was her strength and she enjoyed attending All Saints Catholic Church in Eagle Butte. As her health declined over the last year Eddie took the role of being her primary caretaker with the guidance from Betty and Kathy, CHRs from Tribal Health of Eagle Butte.

Emaline leaves behind her husband Ed, step-son Terry Moran; daughters Linda (George) Bartlett of Bemidji, MN and Margaret (Bill) Gunville of rural Eagle Butte; brother Vetal LeBeau of Houston, TX; hunka daughters Irma Annis of Bismarck, ND and Dr. Brenda Farris of Tahlequah, OK; grandchildren: Cody Spears, Austin Gunville, Winston Gunville, Shawn Garreaux, and Jeff, Rushael, Tyson (Joyce) and Tiara (Aaron) Maxon; great-grandchildren Kevin, KaIEI and Morgan Spears; Halle, Ralph, Maria and Jay Vrooman; Avery and Oliver Maxon; her faithful friend and companion, Pete; and many nieces, nephews and other family and friends too numerous to mention. Please accept our apologies.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Patrick and Ida LeBeau; daughter Carol, special son-in-law Wayne Maxon; brothers: Herbert, Eric, Harold, Maurice and Seymour; sisters Sybil, Wilma, and Inez; and hunka daughter, Darlyn Fiddler.
