Edna Grace Joens Strong 90, of Spearfish passed away on November 18, 2015 at her home at Garden Hills Assisted Living in Spearfish.
Edna was born to Hans and Alvena (Schlie) Joens on July 9, 1925. She was the 12th of 13 children. She was the first in her family to graduate from high school and inspired her father to get his United States Citizenship as they studied American History together.
She married Hiram Andrew Strong in 1944. They lived in Mobridge, Eagle Butte, Lead and Spearfish. Edna worked for Black Hills State College in the snack shop at the Student Union and as a custodian for 20 years.
Edna always welcomed everyone to her table and loved to fatten them up with her famous potato salad, apple pie and salad dressing chocolate cake.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Hiram in 1996; her parents; all 12 sibling; her daughter, Margaret and sons,Hiram Charles “Chuckie” and William Andrew “Billie”. She is survived by three daughters, Barbara (Stan) Howe of Belle Fourche, Joyce (Dale) Bruce of Tooele, Utah and Miriam (Jim) Hoff of Lead; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM, on Saturday, November 21, 2015 at the United Church of Christ in Spearfish with visitation one hour prior. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery. A memorial has been established to St. Jude’s Children Hospital.
