Dupree High School students win $9,210 award for food program

Six Dupree High School student who all work part-time at the Sioux YMCA, applied for and received one of eight grants from the national YMCA. They competed against projects from across the country. The project title is Waste Management Advocacy & Activism. The goal is to combat food loss in indigenous communities and beyond.

The team is excited to use the award to address needs within the community. Malory Peacock set up initial meetings with Dupree LTM and Dakotamart in Faith. To date Dupree LTM is the only store working with the team. Hopefully other local businesses will partner with them in the near future.

The project aims to put wasted food to better use. The team plans to make meal packs to distribute excess food. They plan to use the model proposed in their grant application to enact even broader change within the state of South Dakota.
