Current COVID-19 Response Plan Level 2

Things of Note:

Despite an increase from four cases to 15, CRST has lowered the COVID Response Plan to Level 2! This is great news. Let’s keep it up! The new variant has arrived in North Dakota so please double-mask and make sure your mask it tight-fitting.

Vaccinations are underway for anyone living on CRST. You do not have to be a tribal member to get one. First shots given: 2,227. Second shots: 1,692. Nationwide 13% of the population has received one vaccine shot. In South Dakota 17.9% of the population has had one shot but only 8.7% have had the second shot.

Deaths in the United States surpassed 500,000 this week. More than one hundred thousand Americans died of COVID-19 in the last four weeks.

Cases in South Dakota are still high and staying high, unlike all of our neighbors except Wyoming. In all the rest cases are going down. North Dakota has 710 active cases versus 1,933 in South Dakota. The statewide mask mandate in Iowa was lifted two weeks ago without consultation with public health experts. Four major cities kept their mandates in place. In the last two weeks new cases in Iowa are down 35%, which makes sense given the lag. It will be interesting to see if they creep up.

Vermont still stands out for its comparison to South Dakota. With similar population and rural country and Republican governors, South Dakota has 1,864 deaths while Vermont has 198, literally one-tenth of the deaths in South Dakota for the third week in a row.
