Current COVID-19 Response Plan Level 5
Things of Note:
After a few weeks of downward trend, the seven-day average for South Dakota is on the rise again. Overall, South Dakota is fourth in the nation for where cases are high and trending down. The other three are Tennessee, Pennsylvania, and Idaho. Our neighbors in North Dakota, Iowa, Wyoming, Montana and Minnesota are in the same boat. Cases in Nebraska remain high and are not going down. The death numbers in North Dakota seem unnaturally low. We will continue to monitor this.
The United States lost 21,000 more people to the coronavirus this week. Take a moment and sit with that figure. That’s everyone in Pierre dead in less than a week. All those deaths were preventable.
We continue to track Minnesota, North Dakota and Vermont for comparison. All three states have a mask mandate in place. We are tracking Vermont as a counterpoint to South Dakota with its similar population, rural living, and Republican governor. Note the disparity of deaths between South Dakota and Vermont, 1,513 versus 149.
