Congresswoman Deb Haaland: “Voting is sacred”

“Good evening. I’m Congresswoman Deb Haaland. I’m grateful to be with you, here on indigenous land… voting is sacred,” said Deb Haaland who is one of the first Native American women in Congress and is from the Laguna Pueblo in New Mexico.

Haaland appeared tonight on the final night of the 2020 Democratic National Convention. This year, four Native leaders presented the Democrat totals for the states of New Mexico, North Dakota, Alaska and South Dakota. Kellen Returns From Scout is this year’s South Dakota Delegate Chair and he spoke from the Black Hills on Wednesday night.

South Dakota had seven indigenous delegates, including Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal member Remi Bald Eagle who is running for the South Dakota Public Utilities Commission.

Haaland, whose words “Voting is sacred”, has gone viral on social media continued her speech, “My people know that. Whether your ancestors have been here for hundreds of years or you’re a new citizen, know this: whether we vote, and how we vote will determine if our nation’s promise of social, racial, and environmental justice will outlast us.”
