Common road condition terminology to know

Travel Advisory: Roads are not closed. No unnecessary travel is advised. Motorists should exercise caution when traveling in adverse weather.

Travel Alert: Motorists can still travel but may encounter areas with winter weather driving conditions on roadways. Motorists should allow extra time to reach their destination and be alert to conditions that may make travel difficult, change rapidly, or cause travel delays. A Travel Alert has the potential to change to a No Travel Advisory if conditions worsen.

No Travel Advisory: Motorists should not travel due to hazardous conditions which may make it unsafe to travel and snow plows may be pulled from the roads during severe winter conditions. Motorists who choose to disregard this advisory do so at their own risk, and may become stranded Emergency responders may not be able to reach them safely.

Road Closure: Roads are closed to traffic. A detour may be offered to motorists.

Black ice: a thin coat or glaze of ice on the road that may not be visible to motorists
