C-EB boys win two of three over break

Christmas break is over, but the C-EB boys’ basketball team stayed busy the final week of the holiday playing three games in four days. The boys’ picked up wins against AA  on Wednesday and Todd County on Saturday, but fell to the Red Cloud Crusaders on Thursday.

Todd County
Grant Kohlus and Brexton Traversie combined for 40 points to lead C-EB over Todd County on Saturday night in Eagle Butte with a 74-65 win. Kohlus finished with 25 points and nine rebounds, and Brexton Traversie put up 15 points and pulled down 15 rebounds in his third straight double-double outing for C-EB. This is the second time the Braves have defeated Todd County this season, the first being at LNI with a 84-64 win in the Paha Sapa Championship game.

The Braves dominated early on jumping out to a 17-4 lead in the first quarter.

In the second stanza, the Falcons fired back on a 15-11 run to pull within nine points with three minutes to go in the quarter.

The Falcons made a couple of runs at C-EB in the second half and pulled within six points late in the fourth quarter. However, Wyatt Jewett sunk a three to put a little cushion between the two teams to hold off Todd County with a 74-65 win.

Along with Kohlus’s 25 points and Traversie’s 15 points, Jewett finished the night with 10 points and five rebounds. Brennon Iron Hawk added nine points and 11 rebounds

Red Cloud
On New Year’s Eve, the Braves hosted the Red Cloud Crusaders. The matchup was originally scheduled for December 26, but was postponed until the January 31.  The Crusaders came into the contest 5-1, having only lost to LNI champs, Winnebago.

Red Cloud came out running in the first quarter and outscored the Braves 20-11. The Crusaders would hang on to a 10-point cushion throughout the game but pulled ahead by 14 at the end of the game, handing the Braves their second loss of the year by a score of 79-65.

Grant Kohlus led all scorers with a game high 32 points, including six three-pointers and pulling down nine rebounds. Brexton Traversie finished the night with his second double-double of the week with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

The Crusaders had three players in double digits with Kobey O’Rourke leading the way with 22 points. O’Rourke surpassed the 1,000 career point milestone during the game.  Terrell Pulliam finished with 16 points and Will Garnier added 11. The Crusaders were hot from behind the arc, nailing 10 three-pointers in the game.

East/West Classic
The Braves faced the Douglas Patriots at the annual East/West Classic in Chamberlain. The classic usually pits a west river team with an east river squad, however the Braves faced the AA Patriots for the first time in recent years.

The Braves jumped out with a 10-point lead against the Patriots in the first quarter, outscoring Douglas 20 to 10. Both teams scored 11 points each in the second period, keeping the Braves with the ten-point cushion heading into halftime.

The Braves offense lit up in the second half scoring 24 points in the third quarter while the defense allowed the Patriots only 11 points, giving C-EB a 23-point lead heading into the final quarter.

The Patriots scored 22 points in the fourth quarter, however C-EB put up 23 to extend the lead to 24, giving the Braves their fifth win of the season with a 78-54 win.

Four Braves finished in double digit scoring with senior Grant Kohlus leading the way with 24 points and eight rebounds. Brexton Traversie finished with a double-double. The 6’3 junior put up 16 points while dominating the boards with 14 rebounds. Junior Wyatt Jewett finished with 15 points, including two three-pointers and grabbed five rebounds. Sophomore Dayson Kohlus finished the contest with 12 points. Anthony Jones and Tucker Severson led the Patriots with 11-points each.

The Braves, with Traversie’s lead, dominated the boards with 44 rebounds while Douglas pulled down 25.
