C-EB 59′ Champs Inducted into South Dakota Basketball Hall of FameFree Access

The South Dakota Basketball High School Hall of Fame (SDBHF) recognized Robert Mandan of the Cheyenne River Reservation, one of two surviving members of the 1959 Cheyenne-Eagle Butte High School State Championship team.

The other surviving member, Percy Phillips, lives in Washington State, according to Jesse Mendoza, a board member of the SDBHF organization.

The team’s coach, Gus Colb, passed away at the age of 93 only a month ago, Mendoza said.

The 1959 team consisted of Freddie Knife, Chester “Chet” Condon, Keeler Condon, Melvin Bagola, Percy Phillips, Robert Mandan, Deleno “Butch” Chasing Hawk, Eugene Red Bird, Tommy Makes Him First and Elgin Stricker.

“It’s a difficult thing to do to win a state championship,” Mendoza said.

The ‘59 team all played together throughout high school, which helped to strengthen their bond and power as a team, Mendoza said.

Mendoza, who graduated in 1971, said that his peers talked about the ‘59 team and individual players all of the time, but Mendoza thinks many of the youth today do not know who these are.

“They were the things that legends are made of,” said Mendoza of the team.

As a teenager, I had the pleasure of playing basketball with Elgin Stricker in Thunder Butte, he would always come out to shoot a couple of hoops. I am so proud to see him and the rest of the team be honored for all their accomplishments.
