The Cheyenne Eagle Butte girls basketball team will have the opportunity to defend their Region 6 championship after defeating the Chamberlain Lady Cubs 68-54 in the upper bracket of the Region 6A basketball tournament last Thursday night.
Four C-EB players finished with double digit scoring in the win as three seniors led the way. Dawnee Keckler finished with 19 points followed by K’Dyn Newbrough who put up 15 and Tahnee Shaving netted 13. Sophomore Justice Fire Cloud put up 10 points.
The game was close in the first quarter as the Lady Cubs held their only lead of the game at 12-11. However the Braves offense fired up in the second quarter while the C-EB defense held Chamberlain to only four, second quarter points. The Braves regained the lead and jumped out to a 24-16 halftime score.
The Cubs found some traction in the third quarter hitting 11 baskets from the field and 11 from the charity stripe to outscore the Braves 22-21 and decrease their deficit by one. The Braves hit 11 of 12 from the free throw line in the quarter.
Keckler scored 11 points in the final quarter as the Braves pulled away from Chamberlain and put a 14-point cushion at the final buzzer.
In addition to Keckler, Newbrough, Shaving, and J. Fire Cloud’s combined 57 points, Snowy Fire Cloud finished with six points and Spirit Grass put up five for C-EB.
Dawson Munger led Chamberlain with 16 points and Alayne Daly and Paige Reuer put up 12 points each.
The Braves will meet up with McLaughlin for the region championship on Friday night in Ft. Pierre. The number two seeded McLaughlin defeated Stanley County in the opening round of the tournament 78-43 to advance to the semi-finals were they defeated the Mobridge-Pollock Lady Tigers 68-50 to advance to the finals.
The two teams faced each other to open up the season on December 12. C-EB walked away with a 76-68 win.
C-EB Head Coach Jess Mendoza said it will be a good game. “The girls got to play hard if they want to win, this is what we have been working on all season.”
“We beat them at home in the opener but everybody is trying to get there. Both our teams have improved, it will be a good game,” said Mendoza.
Mendoza credits his seniors for being team leaders throughout this season.
“The seniors have been real positive all season and have really been supportive of the younger players. I’m really proud of this team,” said Mendoza.
The game will be played at 7:00 p.m. MDT with doors opening at 6:00 p.m. MDT.
