Braves cage Tigers with last second shot

The Cheyenne Eagle Butte and Mobridge/Pollock rivalry is one of the best in the state of South Dakota. The competition between these two schools goes back decades and continues to this day.


When these two teams meet, regardless of season records or who might be ranked, both teams bring that competitive fire to the court.


The Cheyenne Eagle Butte girls kicked off the season with a nine point win over the Tigers. The two teams met again on Saturday night in Mobridge and they didn’t disappoint as the game was practically tied from the opening jump to the buzzer beater in the end.


The Tigers got things started jumping out to a 4-0 lead with two baskets from Lauren Henderson.


Snowy Fire Cloud hit a three pointer and a jumper to put C-EB up by one. With a basket and free throw by Wamdi Johnson, the Braves were up 8-4.


The Lady Tigers clawed back into the game with six unanswered points to go ahead by two. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the quarter, keeping the score tied at 17-17. Henderson would score for Mobridge-Pollock, giving the Lady Tigers a two-point advantage heading into the second period.


Johnson hit a bucket from under the basket to tie the game at 19 to start the second quarter. The Tigers went on a 9-4 run in pushing their lead to five at 28-23.


A basket by Mary Garter and a pair of free throws by Rian Logg pulled the Braves to within a point of Mobridge-Pollock with 1:04 left in the half.


Lady Tiger Naomi Stroeder made one of two free throws at 55 seconds to give the Tigers a two-point lead. With 35 seconds remaining, C-EB’s Garter scored, tying the game at 29 to end the half.


Mid-way through the third quarter, C-EB trailed 38-34 after Mobridge’s Kallie Pearman hit a three. Garter responded with six straight points giving C-EB a momentary lead at 40-38 before Henderson tied the game for the Lady Tigers to close the quarter.


C-EB jumped out to a 7-2 run on Mobridge after Johnson scored twice from underneath and a three by Fire Cloud. Sam Good Shield made it a three point game momentarily before Logg put the 


Braves up by five with another basket.


With just over two-minutes left in the game the Lady Tigers started a 4-0 run on C-EB to pull within a point. With 48.5 seconds left, Henderson put the Tigers up by one.


To get the ball back, C-EB sent the Lady Tigers to the line. With 30 seconds left, Lady Tiger Naomi Stroeder missed the front end of a one on one to give the ball back to C-EB. However a C-EB turnover gave the Lady Tigers the ball. Again, the Braves needed to foul and sent Good Shield to the line with 21.6 seconds remaining, however she missed but the Tigers got the rebound. 


The Braves got the ball back on a steal with less than five seconds on the clock.  


Still trailing by one, the Braves brought the ball up court and with time shrinking, Sal Jewett put up a shot near the half-court line but came up short. However, the ball came down in the hands of Mary Garter under the basket and with just a second left put up a bank shot as the buzzer sounded giving the Braves the win.


Mary Garter led the Braves with 18 points, while Wamdi Johnson finished with 10 points. Snow Fire Cloud and Rian Logg had eight points each. Henderson led the Lady Tigers with 14 points followed by Naomi Stroeder who put up 11 points.


The Braves will be at home on Thursday night as Standing Rock comes to town. The Braves will host Little Wound on Saturday and will have a week off before playing Stanley County next Saturday.
