Dupree High School (DHS) students recently attended the South Dakota State Student Council Conference, and while there learned a lot leasership skills, particpated in fun, activities and celebrates for one of their members who was voted in for a regional officer position.
Voted in as the Upper Missouri Region Student Council Parliamentarian, Clifton Birkeland, junior, presented a campaign speech with an introduction in Lakota followed by English.
During the 2019-2020 school year, Birkeland will attend and maintain order at the planning meetings for this region and assist with putting on the Upper Missouri Regional Student Council meeting held in Mobridge in November.
While at the conference, in addition to voting for various office positions at both the regional and state levels, students went to two presentations by Neurologist, Psychologist and Comedian Matt Ballace.
They also helped make fleece quilts to donate to the Sanford Children’s Hospital, and attended workshops on topics designed to help student leaders strengthen their student councils and increase student council involvement in their schools.
Workshops also helped students learn more about fundraising for activities, how to be more effective speakers/presenters, teen teaching, the SD Children’s Miracle Network’s activities, mediation for teens, ideas that have worked throughout the state for other student councils and more.
In addition to learning and sharing, the teens enjoyed social opportunities such as attending a dance, playing laser tag and board games — to name a few.
On the final night, a semi-formal banquet was held, awards were presented, and the office winners were announced.
