Big Eagle receives 15 years for second degree murder

22 year old Corbyn Big Eagle, of Eagle Butte was sentenced to 180 months in federal custody, followed by five years of supervised release, for the June 2015 stabbing death of Austin Miner.

Big Eagle pled guilty to the charge of Second Degree Murder on September 7, 2016.

On June 16, 2015, during a social gathering at Big Eagle’s residence in Eagle Butte, an altercation took place between two males who were present at the party, After the victim punched the other man, a third man at the party jumped in and took the victim to the floor and restrained him.  

In the meantime Big Eagle went to the kitchen, grabbed a large knife, and stabbed the victim once in the chest.  The stab wound was fatal and the victim died. 

This case was investigated by the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Miller prosecuted the case.

Big Eagle was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service to begin his sentence.
